5Pricey, but it does perform
By Daddy Duayne
I've had one of these for a couple of years now. It consistently brews great coffee, from 1 to about 5 cups.It brews a full pot very quickly, in maybe 5 minutes, at a great temperature. The metal thermal carafe keeps the coffee warm for 2 hours or more.It has a very large footprint and very thick cord, which could be an issue if you've limited counterspace. The price is steep (thank you for the gift, dear wife) and Amazon's price is pretty much what it costs anywhere. But if you spend the money to buy really good coffee, and maybe grind the beans yourself, this will get you the true, best taste from your efforts. If you want a less-expensive coffeemaker that seems to come close to this, check out the BONAVITA BV-1800 AUTOMATIC COFFEE BREWER.

I have been making coffee for 50 years. I have tried just about every brand of coffee maker in the world still seeking the perfect product. Well, I will look no further. It is sitting on my kitchen cabinet as we speak. The simplicity of this item is unbelievable...one switch. The performance is even better...perfectly brewed coffee in minutes. Cleanup...a breeze. I bought my Technivorm Model KBTS from Seattle Coffee Gear. Amazon may have a picture problem. Mine makes 8 - 5 oz. cups of coffee, not 6. Also the carafe rim is stainless steel (not plastic) and is flat across the top (not belled). Oh well - I love this machine. Some technical data: A little research will tell you that critical coffee making factors are water temperature and brew time. Roughly it is about 200*F and brew time of no more than 5 minutes or so. Much deviation and you will notice it in the taste. I have instrumented the grounds baskets of a dozen or so coffee makers (no names - but most were popular brands found on most kitchens)and tested the water brewing temperature. Most are in the 165*F range. In fact only two I tested meet the spec of 200*F +- 5*F (that would be the Technivorm and the Bonavita). Another factor is the spray pattern. It seems that the more even the spray pattern is on the grounds, the better the "ground rise" becomes during the brew. The difference in a full body taste and bitter is a fine line. And how nice it is to have a "hot" cup of coffee...not lukewarm.A word on gadgets: I have had them all. Clocks, timers, grinders, radios, giant capacity, single cup, metal carafe, glass, and more. Most of these kinds of things really don't contribute to the desired end product. You really can live without them. The only serious choice you will need to make is glass vs. stainless steel (SS) carafe. This comes down to a personal preference. Some people like glass because they think the SS metal imparts a taste to the coffee. Some prefer SS because it will keep the coffee warm longer...unless you have glass and turn on the warmer burner which SS fanboys claim imparts a "burnt" taste to the coffee in about five minutes. Glass advocates also like to point out that the thermal advantages of the SS only works if you pre-warm the SS pot with hot water. OMG. Like I said...your preference. Myself, I like SS because it keeps the coffee warm without a burner, doesn't break (I am clumsy first thing in the morning), and I don't mind the quick hot water preheat to the SS pot while I feed the dogs. No big deal.I mentioned earlier that two products seem to pass the important technical parameters for a good cup of coffee. That being the Bonavita and the Technivorm. This choice is actually the hard one to make because I am pretty sure that most people will not detect any difference in a blind taste test (all other things being equal). The Bonavita costs about half of what the Technivorm does. Is it worth it? I don't know. Some of the physical differences:Bonavita: Glass lined thermal carafe. Solves that pesky (imaginary?) metal taste but reports of broken glass are rampant on the internet. The spray nozzle pattern doesn't appear as effective but you will never tell that from examining the grounds after the brew. The brew water seems to be a couple of degrees cooler (no big deal...197*F still meets spec better than any of the other offerings except Technivorm). Stainless steel water heater. Made in China. Fairly new product, appears to be well-built but no long term reliability history yet.Technivorm: Made in Netherlands. Design has been around and improved for many years. Demonstrated long service life. Copper water heater internals.Tough choice but I suspect that you will be really happy with either. I ended up buying the Technivorm merely because of the reputation. So tired of buying a new coffee maker every couple of years or so.

5*THE* Coffeemaker ...you can stop looking now
By Marla Bodi
The Technivorm Moccamaster is a marvel. And, believe me, I did enough research beforehand to assure myself that such a description was probably true, just on account of the price. Woo! I have never paid so much for a coffeemaker! I have, however, owned 8 of them in 30 years. That's just not right. What I knew going in was that none of the 8 coffeemakers I have owned measured up to this one --some because the technology/market demand wasn't "there" yet and others because they just aren't as good, even though they had major brand recognition and lots of rave reviews and some even worked pretty well. The most important thing I have learned during all my years of coffeeholism is something I learned doing this research: The water that brews your coffee has to be between 195-205 degrees; otherwise, there's virtually no possibility that the flavor can be extracted from the ground beans. I guess grinding the coffee beans right before you brew counts for a lot, too, but I was unaware that it made that much difference, so i have no frame of reference in that regard.. The water temperature thing is BIG, though. This machine is ultra-simple in looks, a very sleek, almost retro, look --clean lines, beautiful stainless steel carafe. Some have said that this carafe doesn't keep coffee hot, but I'm afraid I make what I need and serve it --it only takes 5-8 minutes (!) to make an entire pot, so keeping it hot is not an important issue in my opinion. There has also been criticism that the coffee doesn't pour easily because of the shape of the carafe's spout. Okay. If that's all you can find, then ...whatev. ;o]I was so... in awe, sort of, at ordering such an expensive coffeemaker. Okay, so I have money issues - who doesn't? Besides, you can read and research any item all you want, but you don't really know, until you have the thing in hand, whether it lives up to the reviews and claims. When we received it, it was almost like opening sunken treasure; and making our first pot was done in respectful silence. (see "money issues" above). :o) We were stunned. WHAT. A. GOOD. CUP. OF. COFFEE. The same coffee we thought must have been ground wrong or mixed wrong or something, it was so bad in our Capresso, turned out PERfectly in the Technivorm.. Hallelujah! There's still hope for getting great coffee from a home coffeemaker! What's funny is that, really examining the machine one day, I realized that it is REALLY simple-looking --not just in design but in concept. It looks as if someone was having their 39th bad cup of coffee and they threw up their hands and said, "Oh, HELLZbellz, *I* could make a better coffeemaker!" and then they just did --with the same uninformed but very enthusiastic fervor they made go-karts when they were kids. But, most definitely, this is not to say that it's not a sophisticated machine. OHhhh, no --they certainly know what they're doing, and the Moccamaster is obviously worth every penny. It's a simple and yet sophisticated design and, most importantly, it absolutely works like a dream. Technivorm's rave reviews are warranted, in my opinion, and I feel very comfortable giving it one myself. I'm sorry that, apparently, there's not as good a machine made in America; but the Netherlands is not a bad second choice! If you're determined to finally have a GREAT cup of coffee, EVERY time you make one, and, quite likely, use less coffee in the process, then this is your new machine. We've saved a lot of money on coffee already --it wasn't that the coffee was ground wrong, and we didn't have to use *more* to get the flavor we wanted; it was just that the brewing water wasn't hot enough and it took 12+ minutes to brew!Solution? Technivorm Mocca Master. We LOVE this thing, and I bet you will, too.
