By Diana
Background: I like to grind my own beans just before brewing. I'm not a hard-core cupper, just one who can appreciate and enjoy a good cup of coffee. I have always found coffee brewed from Senseo pods and Keurig cups lacking in freshness, taste, and flavor, even as I packed my own. So when my budget espresso machine ceased to work, it came time to getting a new one. I came across the YI from a promotion by Illy. Even as a skeptic of pod-based coffee systems (i.e. Senseo, K-cup), the deal was too good to pass up.Verdict: This hefty little machine and the Iperespresso capsules has won me over. For the same reasons the masses have liked K-cups, its convenient and easy to use. But for me as an espresso drinker, it goes beyond that. I owned the DeLonghi EC702 15-Bar-Pump Espresso Maker, Stainless prior to acquiring the Y1. In the two short years I've had it, I have struggled with pulling a decent, consistent shot of espresso. With the Y1, no more fussing around with the grind of the beans, no more tamping of the coffee into the perfect puck, no more yucky shots of espresso due to my failed attempt at becoming a barista. The Iperespresso capsules are all packed, tamped, and ready to go. Just pop it into the machine and pull your shot. Viola! Magical shot of perfectly pulled espresso! The hardware itself is great! It does not take up a lot of counter-top space, looks modern and sleek, the water reservoir is easy to access and refill, and it has that "you get what you pay for" weight to it. Operation-wise, unlike the Y1.1, you have to manually stop the pulling of the shot. Not so much a negative as it is a positive - despite the capsule system, you are still pulling your own shot (easy enough to gauge with a 1-ounce shot glass). It is the one manual element in an otherwise automatic espresso machine.Compared with other espresso systems, the Iperespresso capsules increase the cost per shot a little, but, a small price to pay for convenience and quality coffee from Illy. Perhaps the only downside to this system is that quality of the espresso is dependent on the freshness and quality of the Iperespresso capsules, at least until we can pack our own capsules.
